The story

Maya has been staying with her sister for six weeks with her two kids, and it's working — the kids are in a stable school, and she's started a job at the hospital cafeteria. What she doesn't have is the deposit and first month on the small apartment she's been approved for. She's not asking for a year of support. She needs the door to open so the rest of it can work. We've known each other since middle school. I've watched her do every hard thing right and get one more bill thrown at her.
